Jessie Reyes is a Human Resource Specialist at Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. in Lafayette, IN. His primary goals are to coach and train supervisors, build employee engagement, and foster a positive working environment within the operations function.
In this role and throughout his career, Jessie’s strong work ethic and relationship building skills have contributed to his success in multiple sectors. From student-athlete to coach, he started developing his leadership skills during his collegiate experience.
Jessie graduated from California State University at Bakersfield with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1984. As a wrestler, he compiled an exceptional four-year record of 151-22-1 and was a three-time NCAA Division II All-American, two-time NCAA Division II national champion, and an NCAA Division I national champion.
After graduation, Jessie served as an assistant wrestling coach at Arizona State, Oklahoma State, and Michigan State before starting his career as Purdue University’s head coach in 1993. He was also involved in coaching at the international level and helped coach Team USA to a third-place finish at the 1998 Junior World Freestyle Championships. It was the first time since 1977 that there had been multiple American champions at that age level. The major international competition featured athletes from 17 to 20 years old, representing 33 nations.
Jessie was the head coach at Purdue from 1992 to 2007 and coached 16 All-Americans and four Big Ten champions. His motto was to “live in the present,” and he stressed that hard work and a positive attitude would lead to success. Jessie is the winningest wrestling coach in Purdue University history and was inducted into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Bob Elias Kern County Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.
In 2007, Jessie moved into an administrative role, first as the athletic director at New Haven High School in New Haven, Indiana and then as the athletic director at Pike High School in Indianapolis. In these roles he worked with coaches to help them improve their student engagement and enjoyed helping students apply for college. In 2015, Jessie decided to shift into an industry role at Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc.
