The Teledyne FLIR Data Scientist will be part of a team responsible for in-depth research, discovery and problem-solving related to detection of Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) threats for US Government and Commercial markets. Our products are based on “outside-the-lab” platforms, and include hand-held, wearable, emplaced, and UxV mounted sensors and detectors. Teledyne FLIR’s sensors and detectors generate feature-rich data sets that lead to accurate detection and identification of threats.  The Data Scientist is expected to understand the principles of our core technologies and conduct development and testing of algorithms to improve accuracy and reliability of sensor and detector outputs.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

• Use data science methods, including but not limited to Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) approaches, to perform data processing (e.g. filtering), feature recognition, alarm threshold determination, pattern matching, statistical trending, scoring of detection quality, and integration of other information into decision making.
• Collaborate with other Technologists within Teledyne FLIR on application of AI/ML to system level data fusion, e.g. combining CBRNE sensor outputs with other information in Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) or other situational awareness modalities.
• Plan, design, and conduct data acquisition on sensor prototypes to drive algorithm development.
• Report results to manager and project team for 1 or more projects on a weekly basis for West Lafayette site.
• Compile reports and participate in customer reviews in West Lafayette and in the field.

Job Qualifications:

Background must include:

• B.S. degree in Mathematics, Data Science, Physics, or related engineering disciplines required.
• Minimum of 2 years of applicable experience in data science, modeling, algorithm development, or AI/ML methods (M.S. with 0 years of experience).
• Experience with analytical instrumentation and electronics, CBRNE sensors and detectors desirable.
• Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) skills required.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to effectively communicate and interact with team members and customers.

Proven experience required:

• Perform basic test design – define the question being asked and develop single-variable experiments to answer.
• Act independently to drive experimentation and testing.
• Drive toward solutions to project goals.
• Compile data in a way it can be shared across the organization on a weekly basis.
• Able to troubleshoot and resolve science and project issues.
• Communicate with team members to ensure project goals and timelines are met.
• Conduct basic instrumentation testing on laboratory analysis equipment .

Duties will include propagating and caring for trees in the greenhouse, maintaining trees and collecting data in orchard plantings, helping with experiments to develop better ways to detect resistance, and assisting with laboratory research.
• Ash resistance to emerald ash borer: We are testing and breeding trees that can survive the emerald ash borer. Duties will include propagating and caring for trees in the greenhouse, maintaining trees and collecting data in orchard plantings, and dissecting ash trees to determine EAB resistance.

• We are looking for people who are reliable, meticulous, hard workers who work well alone or as part of a team. Our work requires standing for hours and lifting heavy objects. We work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, rain, mosquitoes, poison ivy, etc. These projects require experience or interest in learning scientific data collection, data entry, forest data collection techniques, woody plant identification, care for plants in a greenhouse, data collection on insect larvae or plant disease symptoms, and use of equipment including riding mower and tractor. Successful applicants may be hired to work on one project or rotate among multiple projects.
