Outside Event: Navigating Two Worlds: Research Data Governance in Academic-Industry AI Collaborations

Abstract:
Data governance in research contexts presents unique challenges distinct from commercial settings, particularly when academic AI projects intersect with industry partnerships. This presentation explores the balance between open science principles and proprietary interests and ways to navigate complex compliance landscapes such as FERPA, IRB requirements, and sector-specific regulations. Attendees will learn critical frameworks for establishing data ownership, access rights, and post-graduation data stewardship in collaborative projects. Through sector-specific examples from healthcare AI to government applications, participants will gain practical strategies for addressing the cultural tensions between academic openness and industrial confidentiality while maintaining ethical AI development standards.
Bio:
Kelly Burns received her Master’s of Science in Library Sciences from the University of Kentucky in 2023. She began her career with the Purdue University Research Repository (PuRR) in 2024, focusing on disseminating information on departmental, institutional, and federal practices in data management to researchers. Kelly’s current research focuses on the analysis of data management plans in federal grant proposals for projects awarded to Purdue researchers and the integration of serious play in research data management instruction, funded by a Purdue Libraries’ REALs seed grant.
Kelly also earned a BA and MA in Spanish language and Latin American studies. As a lifetime advocate for libraries, she spends most of her free time with a book in her hands and enjoys spending time outside with her dog, Colt, and exploring many new places around Lafayette area.
