University Partners at The Data Mine

We are ready to expand The Data Mine model to universities throughout the state of Indiana, with our new Indiana Data Mine program, supported by the Lilly Endowment.

We are also ready to offer The Data Mine experience to students throughout the United States, under the new National Data Mine Network program, supported by the National Science Foundation.


The Data Mine is providing opportunities for students to learn Data Science skills and get real world experience through partnerships with minority serving institutions and small/mid-sized schools.


How to get involved:

Data Mine Seminar
  • Bring The Data Mine to your institution by utilizing our Data Science Training materials but earning credit at your school.
  • All students, regardless of background are welcome
  • 1 project per week = 1 to 3 hours of student work per week
    • Fall: R
    • Spring: Python
    • Other topics include: UNIX, bash, SQL, XML, visualizing data, ML, and Deep Learning
  • 4 course levels to support data science knowledge & experience
Corporate Partner Projects
  • Student experience course with data driven projects from industry
  • Projects are designed to run a full academic year with weekly guidance from a corporate partner mentor
  • Students build impactful industry related skills in data science, visualization, and data engineering
  • 2 meetings per week + Project work = 10 to 13 hours of student work per week
  • Earn credit at home academic institution
Grant-funded Initiatives

  • The Data Mine is currently operating projects through two grant funded initiatives:
    • National Data Mine Network, an NSF funded grant with the American Statistical Association to enable undergraduate students at MSIs to learn data science with hands-on work in research or data science projects by industry partners
    • Indiana Data Mine Network, supported by Lilly Endowment invites students from Indiana-based schools to participate in The Data Mine and engage with Indiana-based companies to grow the state’s tech sector
    • Completed DEAF PODS(Developing Experiential Accessible Framework for Partnerships & Opportunities in Data Science within the Deaf community) last Spring & Summer semesters
    • Open to identifying collaborative grant opportunities with other university partners

What does support look like from The Data Mine?
  • Project support with dedicated TA assignment
  • Project grading
  • Student resources such as online TA office hours & an online community via Piazza available for students to post questions
  • Technical support from our Data Science team
  • Course communications & overall program management
  • Poster review and technical presentation feedback
What role does Faculty have?
  • Create credit bearing course at home institution
  • Student recruitment
  • On-site student support (i.e. regular check-ins on progress)
  • Point of contact for Data Mine staff
