SUMMARY:Outside Event: Executive Forum with Josh Thiel\, Chief Executive Officer & President for Fourth Offset
DESCRIPTION:The Executive Forum is open to the public\, as seating permits\, and provides opportunities for the exchange of ideas and discussion of topics and issues facing business and management. \n  \nJosh Thiel is a distinguished Special Operations Commander and alumnus of West Point\, with 20 years of dedicated service.  As a Special Forces Green Beret\, he led 473 missions and approved over 4\,000 during combat operations\, including 140+ operations across the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.  His nine deployments spanned countries such as Papua New Guinea\, Thailand\, Malaysia\, the Philippines\, Iraq\, Afghanistan\, and Korea\, where he led over 6\,000 missions and built deep regional\, interagency\, and enterprise expertise. \n  \nThiel’s operational leadership proved decisive across multiple high stakes times for the Nation. As Commander of Special Operations Task Force–Afghanistan\, he designed the campaign strategy\, developed new technology\, and led 2\,000 U.S. Soldiers\, NATO SOF\, and 20\,000 Afghan Commandos in an effort that destroyed ISIS in Afghanistan.  His command there spanned SOF\, intelligence\, legal\, drone\, logistics\, and aviation units.  Earlier\, as Operations Director for Joint Special Operations Task Force–Philippines\, Thiel directed joint operations\, logistics\, and aviation during the Typhoon Yolanda response\, commanding 500 Operators\, two destroyers\, and an Air Force squadron.  He later led the combined 30\,000 soldier U.S.–Philippine force during the three month response to the Zamboanga uprising. \n  \nThroughout his career\, Thiel led strategic initiatives for Special Operations Command\, integrating drone platforms\, edge communications\, and custom software.  He tested 6 software suites and 11 communications platforms\, prioritizing fieldability and mission relevance.  His precise use of technology helped defeat ISIS in Afghanistan in four months—ending their four year territorial expansion—and set conditions for SOF readiness in Ukraine. From 2019 to 2020\, as Commander of Special Operations Training at the National Training Center and Joint Readiness Training Center\, Thiel modernized SOF training by rebuilding peer threat air defense scenarios\, integrating cyber and social media\, resulting in the certification of more than 20\,000 Special Forces\, PSYOP\, Civil Affairs\, MARSOC\, Ranger\, and 160th SOAR personnel. \n  \nWhile serving as Chief Growth Officer at Hinz Consulting\, Thiel led marketing\, sales\, and the AI \nCenter of Excellence. In building the AI practice\, he evaluated more than 43 software platforms for enterprise use\, securing strategic partnerships with nine AI platforms and creating a new revenue stream. He directed technology selection\, negotiations\, and integration efforts for ten enterprise level DoD Prime vendors\, ensuring smooth adoption of mission critical capabilities. Thiel later launched his own company\, Fourth Offset\, focused on delivering cutting edge technology for peer competition. \n  \nAn accomplished author with six publications\, he also serves as a judge for innovation hackathons\, helping shape mission relevant technologies for warfighters.  He holds two master’s degrees and is pursuing a Doctorate in Technology at Purdue University. \nLOCATION: Krannert Auditorium\, Room 140

SUMMARY:Outside Event: Learning from the Real World: Designing AI systems for Traumatic Brain Injury Care
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: : Pranav Manjunath \, PhD candidate in Biomedical Engineering\, Duke University \nAbstract: \nArtificial intelligence is reshaping healthcare\, and meaningful progress requires more than just data and models—it demands understanding how healthcare providers think\, care\, and practice. This talk explores how bridging qualitative insights with quantitative AI research can lead to human-centered systems that enhance clinical reasoning and decision-making. Drawing from my work in traumatic brain injury care\, I will discuss the challenges\, opportunities\, and design principles for building trustworthy\, real-world clinical AI. \nBio: \nPranav Manjunath is a PhD candidate in Biomedical Engineering at Duke University\, where he develops clinician-centric AI systems for traumatic brain injury (TBI) care. He holds a Master’s in Data Science from Duke University and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from PES University\, India. Advised by Dr. Timothy Dunn\, his research focuses on building multimodal and explainable AI systems that leverage real-world clinical evidence to enhance clinical reasoning and decision-making. He has received multiple Best Paper Awards at leading health machine learning conferences such as AIME and IEEE BHI\, actively mentors students\, and is passionate about translating his research into real-world impact. Pranav is also a Visiting Researcher at Carnegie Mellon University\, where he collaborates with Dr. Adam Perer to design and evaluate interactive AI systems in healthcare. Beyond research\, he is a professional violinist\, having performed over 700 concerts worldwide. \nThis session is part of the Spring 2026 Online AI Capstone Virtual Speaker Series hosted by the Purdue University Online Capstone Experience. \nFor more information and to learn how to get involved\, please reach out at POCapstone@purdue.edu https://www.purdue.edu/online/artificial-intelligence/master-of-science-in-artificial-intelligence-msai-capstone-experience/

SUMMARY:Outside Event: Convergence: The Momentum Cross-Pillar Challenge
DESCRIPTION:March 28th 12:00 PM – March 29th 2:00 PM @ WTHR & HAMP\n\nCompetition Overview\nConvergence: The Momentum Cross-Pillar Challenge is a collaborative competition where participants work in teams to solve a real-world problem that combines elements of finance\, engineering\, and software.\nAt the start of the event\, teams will receive the challenge prompt along with any relevant resources or data. Teams will then have several hours to analyze the problem\, develop a solution\, and prepare a short presentation.\nThe goal of the competition is to encourage interdisciplinary thinking and creative problem solving. Participants will work with teammates from different backgrounds to approach the challenge from multiple perspectives and develop a practical solution.\nThe exact challenge will only be revealed at the start of the event. \nWhat Teams Will Be Expected To Do\nOnce the challenge is revealed\, teams will work together to develop a solution within the given timeframe. Depending on the nature of the prompt\, teams may be expected to:\n• analyze a problem scenario or dataset\n• develop a technical concept\, prototype\, or system design\n• propose a financial\, operational\, or strategic solution\n• evaluate trade-offs and feasibility of their approach\n• prepare a short presentation explaining their solution\nAt the end of the work session\, teams will present their ideas to a panel of judges. Presentations should clearly explain the team’s approach\, reasoning\, and proposed solution.\nJudges will evaluate submissions based on factors such as creativity\, feasibility\, clarity of explanation\, and overall impact of the idea.\n  \nStudents can RSVP here: Thursday 26th is the Deadline!\nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdupPCBXXAOS55ZWLvwk9pwi5CRdjplEYzv6CBCOs36Pv3Suw/viewform
