SUMMARY:Outside Event: Executive Forum with Josh Thiel\, Chief Executive Officer & President for Fourth Offset
DESCRIPTION:The Executive Forum is open to the public\, as seating permits\, and provides opportunities for the exchange of ideas and discussion of topics and issues facing business and management. \n  \nJosh Thiel is a distinguished Special Operations Commander and alumnus of West Point\, with 20 years of dedicated service.  As a Special Forces Green Beret\, he led 473 missions and approved over 4\,000 during combat operations\, including 140+ operations across the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.  His nine deployments spanned countries such as Papua New Guinea\, Thailand\, Malaysia\, the Philippines\, Iraq\, Afghanistan\, and Korea\, where he led over 6\,000 missions and built deep regional\, interagency\, and enterprise expertise. \n  \nThiel’s operational leadership proved decisive across multiple high stakes times for the Nation. As Commander of Special Operations Task Force–Afghanistan\, he designed the campaign strategy\, developed new technology\, and led 2\,000 U.S. Soldiers\, NATO SOF\, and 20\,000 Afghan Commandos in an effort that destroyed ISIS in Afghanistan.  His command there spanned SOF\, intelligence\, legal\, drone\, logistics\, and aviation units.  Earlier\, as Operations Director for Joint Special Operations Task Force–Philippines\, Thiel directed joint operations\, logistics\, and aviation during the Typhoon Yolanda response\, commanding 500 Operators\, two destroyers\, and an Air Force squadron.  He later led the combined 30\,000 soldier U.S.–Philippine force during the three month response to the Zamboanga uprising. \n  \nThroughout his career\, Thiel led strategic initiatives for Special Operations Command\, integrating drone platforms\, edge communications\, and custom software.  He tested 6 software suites and 11 communications platforms\, prioritizing fieldability and mission relevance.  His precise use of technology helped defeat ISIS in Afghanistan in four months—ending their four year territorial expansion—and set conditions for SOF readiness in Ukraine. From 2019 to 2020\, as Commander of Special Operations Training at the National Training Center and Joint Readiness Training Center\, Thiel modernized SOF training by rebuilding peer threat air defense scenarios\, integrating cyber and social media\, resulting in the certification of more than 20\,000 Special Forces\, PSYOP\, Civil Affairs\, MARSOC\, Ranger\, and 160th SOAR personnel. \n  \nWhile serving as Chief Growth Officer at Hinz Consulting\, Thiel led marketing\, sales\, and the AI \nCenter of Excellence. In building the AI practice\, he evaluated more than 43 software platforms for enterprise use\, securing strategic partnerships with nine AI platforms and creating a new revenue stream. He directed technology selection\, negotiations\, and integration efforts for ten enterprise level DoD Prime vendors\, ensuring smooth adoption of mission critical capabilities. Thiel later launched his own company\, Fourth Offset\, focused on delivering cutting edge technology for peer competition. \n  \nAn accomplished author with six publications\, he also serves as a judge for innovation hackathons\, helping shape mission relevant technologies for warfighters.  He holds two master’s degrees and is pursuing a Doctorate in Technology at Purdue University. \nLOCATION: Krannert Auditorium\, Room 140

SUMMARY:Outside Event: Navigating Two Worlds: Research Data Governance in Academic-Industry AI Collaborations
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Kelly Burns\, Research Data Management Specialist\, Purdue University \nAbstract:\nData governance in research contexts presents unique challenges distinct from commercial settings\, particularly when academic AI projects intersect with industry partnerships. This presentation explores the balance between open science principles and proprietary interests and ways to navigate complex compliance landscapes such as FERPA\, IRB requirements\, and sector-specific regulations. Attendees will learn critical frameworks for establishing data ownership\, access rights\, and post-graduation data stewardship in collaborative projects. Through sector-specific examples from healthcare AI to government applications\, participants will gain practical strategies for addressing the cultural tensions between academic openness and industrial confidentiality while maintaining ethical AI development standards. \nBio:\nKelly Burns received her Master’s of Science in Library Sciences from the University of Kentucky in 2023. She began her career with the Purdue University Research Repository (PuRR) in 2024\, focusing on disseminating information on departmental\, institutional\, and federal practices in data management to researchers. Kelly’s current research focuses on the analysis of data management plans in federal grant proposals for projects awarded to Purdue researchers and the integration of serious play in research data management instruction\, funded by a Purdue Libraries’ REALs seed grant.\nKelly also earned a BA and MA in Spanish language and Latin American studies. As a lifetime advocate for libraries\, she spends most of her free time with a book in her hands and enjoys spending time outside with her dog\, Colt\, and exploring many new places around Lafayette area. \nThis session is part of the Spring 2026 Online AI Capstone Virtual Speaker Series hosted by the Purdue University Online Capstone Experience. \nFor more information please reach out at POCapstone@purdue.edu \nREGISTRATION: https://purdue-edu.zoom.us/meeting/register/HhoJF0i1SueoWjSd0GVwsQ#/registration

SUMMARY:Outside Event: Data Interoperability in Enterprise Learning Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Presented By: Shelly Blake-Plock\, President of the Institute for Infrastructure and Interoperable Data in Learning (I2IDL)\n\nAbstract: Data interoperability is more than making sure that systems can connect to one another. In this discussion\, we’ll be looking at the processes\, policies\, software instantiations\, and inter-relationships that make interoperability possible in enterprise learning ecosystems. Specifically\, we’ll take a look at data standards and the corresponding open source software supporting learning metadata\, machine-readable shareable competency definitions\, learning activity tracking\, and enterprise learner records.\n\nBio: Shelly has worked at the intersection of learning and technology since 2003. He is a founding board director of I2IDL https://www.i2idl.org/and is CEO of Yet Analytics\, an open source software and R&D firm that he co-founded in 2014. He’s worked as a principal investigator on government R&D projects including the DATASIM modeler for at-scale synthetic xAPI data and has been a part of applied R&D in the space of advanced data architecture with US Army Simulation Technology and Training Center\, Advanced Distributed Learning\, and Air Force Research Laboratory. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE where he has been an officer of the Learning Technologies Standards Committee since 2018.
