DESCRIPTION:Location:  Krannert Auditorium Room 140 \nThe Executive Forum is open to the public\, as seating permits\, and provides opportunities for the exchange of ideas and discussion of topics and issues facing business and management. \n  \n  \nLal Karsanbhai is president and chief executive officer of Emerson\, the $17.5 billion global industrial technology leader based in St. Louis.  Under his leadership\, the company is delivering advanced automation solutions that drive transformational outcomes. \n  \nPrior to being named CEO\, Karsanbhai led Emerson’s Automation Solutions business.  In this role\, which he began in October 2018\, Karsanbhai was responsible for leading strategies\, technologies and innovations to help essential industries enhance operations and achieve Top Quartile performance.  He led Automation Solutions to strong performance\, elevating Emerson’s software profile and digital transformation business. \n  \nKarsanbhai began his career at Emerson in 1995 as an international planner.  He held a number of business development positions of increasing responsibility before being appointed director of corporate planning in 1999.  He served as vice president of the regulator technologies business from 2002 until 2005\, when he moved to Gallardon\, France\, as vice president and general manager of natural gas.  There\, he was responsible for integrating two European natural gas entities\, restructuring the business and setting up a plant in Cluj-Napoca\, Romania. \n  \nKarsanbhai was named president of Emerson’s Fisher regulator technologies in 2008.  In the role\, he was responsible for a global business comprised of four distinct business units\, nine manufacturing plants and 2\,200 employees. \n  \nIn 2012\, he moved to the role of vice president of planning\, which he held until 2014.  He was responsible for coordinating Emerson’s global planning and strategy.  He also worked with top Emerson executives\, business leaders\, business unit presidents and world area leadership to organize the business plans and strategy sessions designed to drive growth and profitability. \n  \nKarsanbhai served as president of Emerson’s former Network Power business in Europe\, Middle East and Africa from 2014 until 2016\, when he was named group president of Emerson’s Rosemount Measurement & Analytical.  He held this role until his appointment as leader of Automation Solutions in 2018. \n  \nKarsanbhai currently serves as the Deputy Chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis and sits on the boards of Merck\, the US-China Business Council and Greater St. Louis\, Inc.  He is also a member of Business Roundtable\, the Regional Business Council of St. Louis and the Washington University\, Olin Business School National Council.  In 2023\, Karsanbhai was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award at Washington University\, Olin Business School. Karsanbhai is fluent in Portuguese\, French and English and has lived and worked in Europe\, Africa and North America. \n  \nHe has a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in business administration from Washington University

He has testified before the U.S. Congress on NAFTA and free trade\, structural reform in Mexico\, and monetary and exchange rate policy. Salinas-León is also director of the Center for Latin America of Atlas Network\, an adjunct fellow of the Cato Institute\, and a senior debate fellow and debate lecturer at the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation. Born in Atlanta to Thai and Indonesian immigrants\, her practice spans participatory installations\, textile\, sculpture\, large-scale murals\, and public art. Her work has been shown at the Brooklyn Museum\, Lincoln Center\, The Museum of the City of New York\, Times Square\, and countless rallies and protests around the world. Amanda’s work transforms everyday spaces into spheres of healing and monuments of belonging. Her process draws upon community contribution and personal narrative to shape portals made of textile\, metal\, wood\, and dreams: an ecosystem of reciprocity between the artist and her communities. He also was the James Franck Professor of Physics and the John T. Wilson Distinguished Service Professor there. He will present “The Music of Diophantine Equations — Harmony or Cacophony?” at 2:30 P.M. on Tue April 8 in the Mathematical Sciences Building\, room 175. A reception will follow at 3:30 P.M. \nThe Hovde Distinguished Lecture Series exemplifies the core principles established by Purdue University President Frederick L. Hovde\, whose legacy was built on a commitment to excellence in both teaching and research. From his very first address to the faculty in January 1946\, Hovde emphasized that education and the extension of human knowledge through research were twin pillars of Purdue’s mission\, believing that one could not thrive without the other. He insisted that first-class teaching and research were mutually dependent\, setting a standard for academic rigor that continues to inspire today. \nThe Music of Diophantine Equations — Harmony or Cacophony? \nABSTRACT \nDiophantine equations are polynomial equations to be solved in integers. They were considered by the ancients\, including Diophantus of Alexandria in the 3rd century AD\, after whom they are named. Although simple-to-state Diophantine equations are often fiendishly difficult to solve\, the mathematics that has been developed in studying their solubility has found widespread application\, proving useful in such real world applications as data encryption and security. In this talk we describe the role that Fourier analysis has played in recent developments surrounding Diophantine equations in many variables. It transpires that these equations satisfy constraints modulo powers of prime numbers\, influencing associated Fourier series\, and in harmonious situations the statistical properties of the solutions may then be interpreted elegantly as a product of factors associated with these prime numbers. The great challenge for researchers in this Diophantine frontier of analytic number theory is to (provably) tune in to this harmony amongst the cacophony of apparent randomness in the integer solutions of these equations. We describe very recent progress on such examples as Waring’s problem by the speaker and his coauthors\, allude to applications concerning equidistribution\, and point to challenges and problems for the future. \n  \nBIO \nTrevor Wooley\, Andris A. Zoltners Distinguished Professor of Mathematics has made fundamental contributions on a variety of topics related to number theory\, most notably related to the Hardy-Littlewood circle method and Waring’s problem. Waring’s problem is a particular example of a Diophantine equation\, which is a polynomial equation to be solved using only integers. Such equations influence the development of codes and cryptosystems for use in DVDs\, in mobile phones\, and in banking security.  Key to their practical utility is the illusion of randomness; although deterministic in nature\, the solutions of these equations in integers should appear randomly distributed to an outsider. One therefore seeks to provide assurance that hidden patterns underlying these solution sets do not unravel their usefulness.  A significant portion of Wooley’s work has focused on the study of Diophantine equations using seemingly unrelated methods from Fourier analysis to make deep connections between harmonic analysis and number theory. \n  \nIn one major direction of research\, Wooley greatly improved the bounds on the number of summands required in Waring’s problem\, which is concerned with the ways in which a positive integer can be written as the sum of the fewest possible number of kth powers of positive integers.  Wooley developed a method called efficient differencing that reduced by a factor of two the relevant bound.  This was the first significant progress in 30 years on this well-studied problem;  this method led to further advances in related problems by many researchers.  Some of the recognition he received for this research includes a 45-minute invited address at the 2002 International Congress of Mathematicians\, election to the Fellowship of the Royal Society (the UK version of the National Academy of Sciences)\, the Salem Prize\, and the Junior Berwick Prize of the London Mathematical Society. \n  \nIn another direction\, Wooley developed a method called efficient congruencing that provides bounds on certain sums of exponential functions.  Special cases of such sums occur in Waring’s problem and in the analysis of the zero-free region of the Riemann zeta function.  Wooley’s approach led eventually to a complete understanding of Vinogradov’s mean value theorem\, settling conjectures originating in 1935.  This theorem relates sums of fixed powers of integers to mean values of an associated sum of exponential functions.  Wooley developed his method of proof over a period of years and received substantial recognition for his contributions in this area\, including a second 45-minute invited lecture at the 2014 International Congress of Mathematicians\, the Fröhlich Prize of the London Mathematical Society\, and a 5-year European Research Council Advanced Grant of 1.9 million euros. \n  \nWooley’s research accomplishments have been recognized in the US and abroad throughout his career.  In addition to the distinctions indicated above\, he has been supported by a Sloan Fellowship and a Packard Fellowship (given at that time to 20 scientists and engineers across the US\, with roughly one per year to a mathematician)\, a Royal Society Wolfson Merit Award\, and several NSF grants in the US.  He has more than 140 publications in excellent journals and has a remarkably high profile in the mathematics community as indicated by his lectures at top universities and conferences throughout the world. \n\nLOCATION:  MATH 175

DESCRIPTION:Visit the AAARCC (915 5th St.) on Thursday\, April 3 from noon to 1pm for the AAARCC’s weekly Lunch & Learn event. Naomi Kwang Alumna of Mitch Daniels School of Business & College of Engineering Partner (Corporate\, M&A) at Barnes & Thornburg LLP\, will present her expertise on “The Power of Coming Together.” \nSharing from learnings\, observations and experience during her leadership journey\, this session focuses on inspiring the Asian community to come together in the workplace to support and advocate for one another. \n  \nNaomi Kwang is a Partner at Barnes & Thornburg\, focusing on corporate law\, mergers and acquisitions\, and international business transactions. She has extensive experience advising U.S. and international clients on M&A deals\, corporate governance\, and commercial contracts\, often acting as a quasi-external general counsel. Fluent in Mandarin and deeply familiar with Asian business culture\, Naomi chairs the firm’s Greater China and Southeast Asia Practice Group\, assisting companies with cross-border investments and operations.\nNaomi graduated from Purdue University with degrees in Industrial Engineering and Economics\, earned her MSc in Operations Research from the Georgia Institute of Technology\, and obtained her JD from Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. Before practicing law\, she held senior consultant roles in Singapore’s Economic Development Board\, KPMG’s Corporate Advisory\, and the National Trade Union Congress\, gaining invaluable corporate experience. Passionate about fostering economic development and US-Asia trade\, Naomi works with businesses and nonprofits to promote cross-border opportunities. \n  \nThis event starts promptly at noon and in-person seating is limited.
