SUMMARY:Outside Event: Hovde Distinguished Lecture Series: Moses Charikar
DESCRIPTION:Join the College of Science for the 2024-25 Hovde Distinguished Lecture Series featuring\, Moses Charikar professor and computer scientist from Stanford University. He will present “How to appease a majority?” at 3:00 P.M. on Wed Mar 26 in the Hall of Data Science and AI\, room 1069. A reception will follow at 4:00 P.M. \nThe Hovde Distinguished Lecture Series exemplifies the core principles established by Purdue University President Frederick L. Hovde\, whose legacy was built on a commitment to excellence in both teaching and research. From his very first address to the faculty in January 1946\, Hovde emphasized that education and the extension of human knowledge through research were twin pillars of Purdue’s mission\, believing that one could not thrive without the other. He insisted that first-class teaching and research were mutually dependent\, setting a standard for academic rigor that continues to inspire today. \n  \nHow to Appease a Majority? \nAbstract \nIn 1785\, Condorcet established a frustrating property of elections and majority rule: it is possible that\, no matter which candidate you pick as the winner\, a majority of voters will prefer someone else. You might have the brilliant idea of picking a small set of winners instead of just one\, but how do you avoid the nightmare scenario where a majority of the voters prefer some other candidate over all the ones you picked? How many candidates suffice to appease a majority of the voters? \nIn this talk\, I will answer this question. Along the way\, we will roll some dice — both because the analysis involves randomness and because of a connection to the curious phenomenon of intransitive dice\, that has delighted recreational and professional mathematicians alike\, ever since Martin Gardener popularized it in1970. \nJoint work with Alexandra Lassota\, Prasanna Ramakrishnan\, Adrian Vetta and Kangning Wang. \n  \nBio \nMoses Charikar is the Donald E. Knuth professor of Computer Science at Stanford University. He obtained his PhD from Stanford in 2000\, spent a year in the research group at Google\, and was on the faculty at Princeton from 2001-2015.\nHis research interests include: efficient algorithmic techniques for processing\, searching and indexing massive high-dimensional data sets; efficient algorithms for computational problems in high-dimensional statistics and optimization problems in machine learning; approximation algorithms for discrete optimization problems with provable guarantees; convex optimization approaches for non-convex combinatorial optimization problems; low-distortion embeddings of finite metric spaces.\nHe won the best paper award at FOCS 2003 for his work on the impossibility of dimension reduction\, the best paper award at COLT 2017\, the 10 year best paper award at VLDB 2017 and the 20 year test of time award at STOC 2022. He was jointly awarded the 2012 Paris Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award for his work on locality sensitive hashing\, was named a Simons Investigator in theoretical computer science in 2014\, and an ACM Fellow in 2021. \n\nLOCATION: Hall of Data Science and AI (DSAI)\, 1069

SUMMARY:Outside Event: Understanding and Mitigating Human Impacts
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to have Dr. Rick Relyea with us on March 4th at 4pm to discuss this research. Please RSVP at the link below. \n  \nDr. Relyea is is the David M. Darrin ’40 Senior Endowed Chair in Biological Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy\, NY\, and served as the Director of Rensselaer’s Darrin Fresh Water Institute and the Director of The Jefferson Project from 2014-2022. \n  \nDiscussion: Global sustainability is being challenged by a suite of ecosystem changes\, including habitat alteration\, invasive species\, overexploitation\, pollution\, and climate change. In aquatic ecosystems\, these human impacts are threatening the security of fresh water and global food supplies. To mitigate these impacts\, we need to understand the dynamics of various impacts over space and time and use a mix of traditional monitoring and advanced sensors and sensor networks that align with these dynamics. Insights from environmental monitoring can then motivate experiments\, which can identify the underlying mechanisms that are responsible for changes to species and ecosystems. We also need to communicate our data and discoveries to the public using novel and engaging outreach efforts. Finally\, we must use our insights to help resource managers move from science to informed solutions.\nMarch 4\, 2025 \nMRGN 121 \n4:00-5:00 pm followed by a reception in the MRGN Cafe \nLet us know you’re coming and save a seat here. \n  \nFiles\nUnderstanding and Mitigating Human Impacts on Aquatic Ecosystems for a Sustainab.ics

SUMMARY:Outside Event: Hovde Distinguished Lecture Series: Dr. Mario Paniccia
DESCRIPTION:https://www.purdue.edu/science/hovde-distinguished-lecture-series/mario-paniccia-2024-25.html \nJoin the College of Science for the 2024-25 Hovde Distinguished Lecture Series featuring\, Dr. Mario Paniccia. He will present “Risk Taking\, Innovation & Failures with Silicon Photonics: A 20+ year Journey from Research to Product in Silicon Valley\,” at 4:00 P.M. on Mon Mar 3 in the Hall of Data Science and AI\, room 1069. A reception will follow at 5:00 P.M. \nRisk Taking\, Innovation & Failures with Silicon Photonics: A 20+ year Journey from Research to Product in Silicon Valley \n  \nAbstract \nThe talk will give insights and learnings on the 20+ year journey of taking Silicon Photonics from a crazy idea that no one thought would ever work to today being one of the key technologies used to transmit optical data in every data center around the world and impacting other areas such as LIDAR and Autonomous vehicles. Dr Paniccia will talk about the successes and failures along the way to make this technology a reality and give his insights to the next generation of future scientists\, innovators and engineers as they go into the high tech industry. \n  \nBio \nDr. Paniccia is a seasoned technical and business executive based in Silicon Valley\, CA. In  November 2019\,  Paniccia was appointed CEO and Chairman of Anello Photonics\, a  VC backed Silicon Photonics startup which he co-founded.  Prior to Anello Photonics\, Paniccia spent  22 years at Intel Corporation where he achieved the status of Intel Fellow\, Chief Technology Officer and GM for the Silicon Photonics Solutions Group. During his tenure at Intel he served in various roles from R&D\, to strategic direction setting\, to driving the development and commercialization of technologies\, and finally running a business unit. Paniccia started Intel’s Silicon Photonics program from its inception and drove the technology to product commercialization. This silicon photonics technology is deployed today in most of the major cloud and data centers around the world. Paniccia is considered one of the industry pioneers and a world expert in the field silicon photonics. \n  \nPaniccia earned a bachelor’s degree in physics in 1988 from the State University of New York at Binghamton and a Ph.D. in solid state physics from Purdue University in 1994. In October 2008 he was named by R&D magazine as “Scientist of the Year”. In May 2009 Paniccia was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Binghamton University. In 2014 Paniccia completed an accelerated Executive leadership program at Stanford University School of Business. Paniccia has over 80 patents issued or pending. He is a Fellow of the IEEE\, SPIE and OSA. In February 2021 Paniccia was inducted into the National Academy of Engineers (NAE) for his “contributions and commercialization to the field of silicon photonics”. \n\nLOCATION:  Hall of Data Science and AI\, 1069
